What is Stoma (Colostomy / Ileostomy)?

A Stoma (Colostomy or Ileostomy) is a surgical opening in the abdominal wall through which a section of bowel is brought to the surface, allowing waste to collect in an external pouch. It can be temporary (to rest the bowel after surgery) or permanent (for severe incontinence, advanced cancer, or end-stage inflammatory bowel disease). With modern stoma care and pouch systems, most patients live full, active lives. Dr. Tejasree Vengala performs both temporary and permanent stomas at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, with sensitivity, expert technique, and structured stoma nurse support.

Suitable for patients needing temporary bowel diversion after major colorectal surgery, severe incontinence not responsive to other treatment, advanced cancer, complicated inflammatory bowel disease, or trauma.

How the Procedure Works

1

Pre-Operative Counselling

Detailed counselling about stoma life, pouch care, and lifestyle adjustments is provided. The optimal stoma site is marked by the stoma nurse.

2

Anaesthesia & Preparation

Surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. The abdomen is prepared and draped in sterile fashion.

3

Bowel Mobilisation

The relevant bowel segment (large intestine for colostomy, small intestine for ileostomy) is mobilised.

4

Stoma Creation

A circular opening is made through the abdominal wall at the marked site, and the bowel is brought through and matured to the skin.

5

Pouch Application & Training

An appropriate pouch is applied, and the stoma nurse trains the patient on care, change, and lifestyle adaptation.
