Lumpectomy (Wide Local Excision)
Removal of an early breast cancer along with a healthy margin while preserving most of the breast — usually combined with radiotherapy for outcomes equivalent to mastectomy in well-selected patients.
What is Lumpectomy (Wide Local Excision)?
Lumpectomy, also known as Wide Local Excision, is the surgical removal of an early breast cancer along with a margin of healthy tissue, while preserving most of the breast. It is the cornerstone of breast-conserving therapy and is usually combined with post-operative radiotherapy for long-term cancer control equivalent to mastectomy in well-selected patients. Dr. Tejasree Vengala, an experienced female breast surgeon in Hyderabad, performs lumpectomy at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, ensuring complete cancer clearance with attention to natural breast shape and symmetry.
How the Procedure Works
Anaesthesia & Preparation
Surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. The breast and underarm area are prepared in sterile fashion, and any localisation wires or imaging markers are checked.
Incision Planning
A carefully planned incision is placed along natural skin lines or around the areola, designed for cancer clearance and the best cosmetic outcome.
Tumour Excision
The cancer is removed along with a healthy margin of surrounding tissue. The specimen is oriented for the pathologist with marking sutures.
Sentinel Node Assessment
If indicated, a sentinel lymph node biopsy is performed through a small underarm incision in the same sitting.
Closure & Recovery
The breast tissue is reshaped to preserve contour, and the skin is closed with fine sutures. Most patients are discharged within 24 hours.

Breast conservation surgery has changed how we treat early breast cancer — most women today can keep their breast and still have outcomes as good as a mastectomy. The art is in finding the right balance between clear margins and a beautiful cosmetic result.
