Mastectomy
Surgical removal of the entire breast — chosen for large, multifocal, or recurrent cancers, or based on patient preference, often with reconstruction options to restore breast shape.
What is Mastectomy?
Mastectomy is the surgical removal of the entire breast and is recommended for women with large or multifocal breast cancers, recurrent disease after previous breast-conserving surgery, certain genetic mutations (BRCA1 / BRCA2), or based on patient preference. Modern mastectomy can be performed in different forms — simple, skin-sparing, or nipple-sparing — and is often combined with reconstruction to restore breast shape. Dr. Tejasree Vengala, an experienced female breast surgeon in Hyderabad, performs mastectomy at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, with sensitivity, dignity, and a clear focus on both cancer clearance and cosmetic outcome.
How the Procedure Works
Anaesthesia & Preparation
Surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. The breast and underarm area are prepared in sterile fashion.
Skin / Nipple Planning
Depending on the type — simple, skin-sparing, or nipple-sparing — incisions are carefully planned for cancer clearance and reconstruction options.
Breast Tissue Removal
All breast tissue is removed completely, with attention to preserving the chest wall muscles and key blood vessels.
Sentinel Node / ALND
Sentinel lymph node biopsy or full axillary dissection is performed in the same sitting, based on cancer stage.
Reconstruction & Closure
Immediate reconstruction with implants or own tissue can be performed if planned. Otherwise, the wound is closed in layers with a soft drain.
