Resection Rectopexy
Combines surgical removal of redundant sigmoid colon with rectopexy — used for select patients with rectal prolapse and severe constipation, addressing both problems together.
What is Resection Rectopexy?
Resection Rectopexy combines two procedures in one operation — removal of the redundant sigmoid colon (sigmoidectomy) and fixation of the rectum to the sacrum (rectopexy). It is particularly useful for patients with rectal prolapse who also suffer from severe constipation due to a long, redundant sigmoid colon. The combination addresses both the prolapse and the underlying functional problem in a single sitting. Dr. Tejasree Vengala performs laparoscopic resection rectopexy at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, offering a definitive solution with improved bowel function.
How the Procedure Works
Anaesthesia & Preparation
Surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. The abdomen is prepared, and a urinary catheter is placed.
Keyhole Access
Three to four small incisions are made for the laparoscopic camera and working instruments.
Sigmoid Mobilisation & Resection
The redundant sigmoid colon is mobilised and resected. The healthy bowel ends are prepared for anastomosis.
Anastomosis & Rectopexy
The healthy bowel ends are joined together. The rectum is then mobilised and fixed to the sacrum to correct the prolapse.
Closure & Recovery
The small incisions are closed with absorbable sutures. Most patients are mobilised the next day and discharged in 3–5 days.
Outcomes
Who Needs This Treatment?
- →Addresses both prolapse and constipation in one surgery
- →Removes the redundant sigmoid colon causing functional issues
- →Significantly improves bowel function and quality of life
- →Minimally invasive laparoscopic approach available
- →Low long-term recurrence rate
- →Comprehensive solution for complex pelvic floor dysfunction
Resection rectopexy is two operations in one — and for the right patient with a long, lazy sigmoid and a stubborn prolapse, it is the only way to truly fix both problems together. The functional improvement afterwards is often dramatic.
