Rectopexy (Laparoscopic / Robotic / Open)
Surgical fixation of the prolapsed rectum back to its natural position inside the pelvis — performed laparoscopically, robotically or open, with excellent long-term cure of full-thickness rectal prolapse.
What is Rectopexy (Laparoscopic / Robotic / Open)?
Rectopexy is the surgical correction of full-thickness rectal prolapse, where the rectum slips out through the anus. The prolapsed rectum is gently mobilised, lifted back into its natural position inside the pelvis, and fixed to the sacrum. The procedure can be done laparoscopically, robotically, or open, depending on patient factors. As an experienced laparoscopic surgeon and female proctologist in Hyderabad, Dr. Tejasree Vengala performs rectopexy at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, offering a definitive solution with low recurrence and improved bowel function.
How the Procedure Works
Anaesthesia & Preparation
Surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. The abdomen is prepared and draped in sterile fashion.
Keyhole Access
For laparoscopic / robotic rectopexy, three to four small incisions are made for camera and instruments. Open rectopexy uses a lower abdominal incision.
Rectal Mobilisation
The rectum is carefully mobilised from surrounding structures, with attention to preserving nerves that control bowel and bladder function.
Fixation to Sacrum
The mobilised rectum is gently lifted into its natural position and fixed to the front of the sacrum using sutures, or with mesh in select cases.
Closure & Recovery
The incisions are closed in layers. Most patients walk the next day, eat soft food, and are discharged in 2–3 days.

- →Preserves natural rectal continuity
- →Compassionate, sensitive care by a female proctologist
Rectal prolapse can be deeply distressing, and women in particular often suffer in silence. A well-done rectopexy puts everything back where it belongs — and most patients tell me afterwards that they wish they had come in years earlier.
