What is Delorme Procedure?

The Delorme Procedure is a perineal (from below) operation for full-thickness rectal prolapse, performed entirely through the anus without any abdominal incisions. The prolapsed mucosal lining is stripped off, and the underlying muscle layer is plicated (folded) to shorten the prolapse and provide internal support. Because it avoids abdominal surgery, the Delorme procedure is particularly suitable for elderly or medically frail patients. Dr. Tejasree Vengala performs the Delorme procedure at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, with attention to gentle technique and quick recovery in this group of patients.

Suitable for patients with full-thickness rectal prolapse who are elderly, medically frail, or those in whom abdominal surgery is not advisable due to co-morbidities.

How the Procedure Works

1

Anaesthesia & Positioning

Surgery is performed under spinal or general anaesthesia. The patient is positioned to allow access through the anus.

2

Mucosal Stripping

The prolapsed bowel is gently delivered through the anus. The mucosal lining is carefully stripped off down to the muscle layer.

3

Muscle Plication

The exposed muscle layer is folded (plicated) with absorbable sutures, shortening the prolapse and reinforcing the rectal wall.

4

Mucosal Reapproximation

The cut edges of the mucosa are sutured back together, restoring the natural lining of the rectum.

5

Recovery & Discharge

Patients are mobilised the same day, started on soft diet, and discharged in 1–2 days with structured follow-up.

Delorme is a wonderful operation for patients who cannot tolerate a big surgery — done entirely from below, gently, and effectively. For an elderly patient with prolapse, it can give back her dignity without putting her through a major operation.
