What is Thiersch Procedure?

The Thiersch Procedure is a simple, low-risk operation in which a soft band of synthetic material or silicone is inserted in a circular tunnel around the anus, narrowing the anal opening and preventing rectal prolapse from coming through. It is reserved for very elderly or frail patients who cannot undergo more definitive surgery. While it does not cure the underlying prolapse, it can significantly improve comfort and dignity. Dr. Tejasree Vengala performs the Thiersch procedure at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, in carefully selected patients with limited surgical options.

Suitable for very elderly or medically frail patients with rectal prolapse who cannot undergo definitive abdominal or perineal surgery, where prolapse control rather than cure is the goal.

How the Procedure Works

1

Anaesthesia

The procedure is performed under spinal or local anaesthesia, depending on patient factors.

2

Two Small Skin Incisions

Two small incisions are made on opposite sides of the anus, creating a circular tunnel under the skin.

3

Band Placement

A soft synthetic band or silicone tubing is passed through the tunnel, encircling the anal opening.

4

Adjustment & Securing

The band is adjusted to allow comfortable passage of stool but prevent prolapse, and the ends are securely fastened.

5

Discharge & Recovery

Most patients are discharged the same day. Sitz baths and a high-fibre diet support smooth recovery.
