What is Ileocecal Resection?

Ileocecal Resection is the surgical removal of the diseased segment at the junction of the small and large intestine — most commonly performed for Crohn's disease affecting this region, which is one of the most frequent locations of the disease. The diseased ileum and cecum are removed, and the healthy small intestine is reconnected to the colon. The surgery can be done laparoscopically or open. As an experienced laparoscopic surgeon in Hyderabad, Dr. Tejasree Vengala performs ileocecal resection at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, with careful technique and structured post-operative care.

Suitable for patients with Crohn's disease affecting the ileocecal region with complications such as strictures, fistulas, abscesses, or non-response to medical therapy. Also performed for select tumours and severe cecal disease.

How the Procedure Works

1

Anaesthesia & Preparation

Surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. The abdomen is prepared, and a urinary catheter is placed.

2

Laparoscopic or Open Access

Three to four small incisions are made for the laparoscopic approach, or a small open incision is used in select cases.

3

Bowel Mobilisation

The diseased ileum and cecum are carefully mobilised, with attention to preserving important blood vessels and lymph nodes.

4

Resection & Anastomosis

The diseased segment is removed, and the healthy small intestine is connected to the ascending colon using staplers or sutures.

5

Closure & Recovery

The incisions are closed in layers. Patients are mobilised the next day, started on liquids, and discharged in 3–5 days.
