Segmental Bowel Resection
Surgical removal of a specific diseased segment of large or small intestine, with reconnection of healthy bowel ends — performed for cancer, severe inflammation, or localised complications.
What is Segmental Bowel Resection?
Segmental Bowel Resection is the surgical removal of a specific diseased segment of the large or small intestine, with healthy bowel ends connected together (anastomosis) to restore continuity. It is performed for colon cancer affecting a specific segment, severe localised inflammation, complications of diverticular disease, isolated Crohn's strictures, or certain bowel injuries. The surgery can be done laparoscopically or open. As an experienced laparoscopic surgeon in Hyderabad, Dr. Tejasree Vengala performs segmental bowel resection at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, with attention to safe technique and quick recovery.
How the Procedure Works
Anaesthesia & Preparation
Surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. The abdomen is prepared, and a urinary catheter is placed.
Laparoscopic or Open Access
Several small incisions are made for the laparoscopic approach, or a small open incision is used in select cases.
Bowel Mobilisation
The diseased segment is carefully mobilised, with attention to preserving important blood vessels and lymph nodes (especially in cancer surgery).
Resection & Anastomosis
The diseased segment is removed with appropriate margins, and the healthy bowel ends are joined together using staplers or sutures.
Closure & Recovery
The incisions are closed in layers. Patients are mobilised the next day, started on liquids, and discharged in 4–6 days.
Outcomes
Who Needs This Treatment?
- →Targeted removal of only the diseased segment
- →Preserves healthy bowel for normal function
- →Effective for localised disease and cancer
- →Laparoscopic approach offers faster recovery
- →Single-stage procedure with primary reconnection
- →Significantly improves symptoms and quality of life
Segmental resection is the principle of doing exactly what the disease requires — no more, no less. Removing only the affected portion and reconnecting healthy bowel preserves natural function while solving the problem definitively.
