What is Incision and Drainage (I&D)?

Incision and Drainage (I&D) is a quick, effective procedure for an acutely infected or abscessed cyst. A small incision is made to release the pus, immediately relieving pain, swelling, and pressure. Antibiotics are given as needed to control the infection completely. Once the inflammation has fully settled, definitive cyst excision can be planned a few weeks later to prevent recurrence. Dr. Tejasree Vengala performs I&D at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, offering quick relief and clear next-step planning for every patient.

Suitable for any acutely infected or abscessed cyst, painful collections of pus, infected sebaceous or epidermoid cysts, and any inflamed soft-tissue collection requiring urgent drainage.

How the Procedure Works

1

Local Anaesthesia

The skin around the abscess is cleaned, and local anaesthesia is given. In severely tender areas, sedation may be added.

2

Small Incision

A small incision is made over the most prominent or fluctuant area of the abscess to release the pus.

3

Drainage & Washout

Pus is drained completely. The cavity is gently washed with saline to flush out remaining infection.

4

Packing or Wick Placement

Depending on size, the cavity is packed with a sterile gauze or wick to allow continued drainage and prevent early closure.

5

Antibiotics & Follow-Up

Oral antibiotics are prescribed if needed. Wound dressings are changed periodically, and definitive cyst excision is planned later when inflammation settles.

When a cyst suddenly becomes painful, hot and tense, the patient does not want a long discussion — they want relief. Incision and drainage gives that relief within minutes, and we plan the definitive excision later, when the tissues are calm and ready.
