Marsupialization
Specialised technique creating a permanent opening in a recurrent or larger cyst — the cyst lining is sutured to the skin to allow continuous drainage and prevent recurrence.
What is Marsupialization?
Marsupialization is a specialised surgical technique used for certain larger or recurrent cysts — particularly Bartholin's cysts, pilonidal cysts, and selected deep cysts where complete excision is challenging or where preserving normal anatomy is important. Instead of removing the cyst entirely, a small portion of the cyst wall is opened and sutured to the surrounding skin, creating a permanent opening that allows continuous drainage. The cyst gradually shrinks and rarely recurs. As a sensitive female surgeon, Dr. Tejasree Vengala performs marsupialization at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, with discreet, dignified care.
How the Procedure Works
Anaesthesia & Positioning
The procedure is performed under local or short general anaesthesia. The patient is positioned comfortably and the area is prepared in sterile fashion.
Cyst Incision
An elliptical or oval portion of the cyst wall is excised over the most prominent area.
Cavity Drainage & Inspection
The cyst contents are drained completely, and the cavity is inspected and washed thoroughly with saline.
Cyst Wall to Skin Suturing
The edges of the remaining cyst wall are carefully sutured to the surrounding skin, creating a permanent open pouch (marsupial-like opening).
Dressing & Discharge
A simple dressing is applied. Patients are usually discharged the same day with structured wound care advice and follow-up.
Outcomes
Who Needs This Treatment?
- →Significantly reduces cyst recurrence
- →Preserves normal anatomy and function
- →Less invasive than complete excision in select cases
- →Excellent option for recurrent Bartholin's cysts
- →Day-care procedure with quick recovery
- →Sensitive, private care by a female surgeon
Marsupialization is a thoughtful operation — instead of fighting the body, we work with it, creating a small permanent drainage path that prevents the cyst from filling up again. For Bartholin's cysts especially, it is often the most respectful, lasting answer.
