What is Cyst Aspiration?

Cyst Aspiration is a quick, needle-based procedure to drain fluid from a simple cyst. It is useful both as a diagnostic step (sending fluid for biopsy) and as a temporary measure to relieve pressure or pain. Aspiration alone is rarely curative — most cysts re-fill over time — but it provides clarity about the nature of the cyst and helps plan further treatment. Dr. Tejasree Vengala performs cyst aspiration at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, often guided by ultrasound for accuracy and safety.

Suitable for selected simple, fluid-filled cysts where diagnosis or temporary relief is needed — including ganglion cysts, breast cysts, simple ovarian cysts (in select cases), and other simple soft-tissue cysts.

How the Procedure Works

1

Local Anaesthesia

The skin is cleaned, and local anaesthesia is given. For deeper cysts, ultrasound guidance is used to identify the exact location.

2

Needle Insertion

A fine needle attached to a syringe is inserted into the cyst, often under ultrasound guidance for accuracy and safety.

3

Fluid Aspiration

The cyst fluid is gently aspirated. The cyst typically collapses, providing immediate relief from pressure or pain.

4

Sample Submission

The fluid is sent for biochemical and / or cytological analysis to clarify the nature of the cyst, especially in suspicious cases.

5

Discharge & Planning

A small dressing is applied, and patients return to normal activities the same day. Further treatment is planned based on the diagnosis.

Aspiration is often the first conversation, not the last — it gives us a quick answer about what is in the cyst, brings immediate relief, and helps decide whether definitive surgery is needed. For some patients, especially with simple cysts, that information alone is hugely reassuring.
