Laparoscopic Hernia Repair (TEP / TAPP)
Modern keyhole inguinal hernia surgery using TEP or TAPP technique — the weak area is reinforced with a soft mesh through 3 small incisions, offering minimal pain, very small scars, and a quick return to work.
What is Laparoscopic Hernia Repair (TEP / TAPP)?
Laparoscopic Hernia Repair (TEP — Totally Extra-Peritoneal, or TAPP — Trans-Abdominal Pre-Peritoneal) is the modern, gold-standard surgery for inguinal (groin) hernias. The hernia defect is approached through 3 small keyhole incisions and reinforced with a soft, lightweight mesh that strengthens the weak area for life. As an experienced laparoscopic surgeon in Hyderabad, Dr. Tejasree Vengala performs both TEP and TAPP techniques at Lux Hospitals, Hitech City, offering significantly less pain, smaller scars, faster recovery and a very low long-term recurrence rate compared to conventional open hernia surgery.
How the Procedure Works
Anaesthesia & Preparation
Surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. The lower abdomen is prepared and draped in sterile fashion, and a urinary catheter is placed if needed.
Keyhole Access
Three small incisions of 5–10 mm are made — one for the laparoscopic camera and two for the working instruments.
Hernia Reduction & Dissection
The hernia contents are gently reduced into the abdomen, the sac is freed, and the defect in the abdominal wall is clearly identified.
Mesh Placement
A soft, lightweight mesh is positioned to cover the entire myopectineal orifice, strengthening the weak area against any future hernia.
Closure & Early Recovery
The small incisions are closed with absorbable sutures and skin glue. Most patients walk within hours and are discharged within 24 hours.
Outcomes
Who Needs This Treatment?
- →Significantly less post-operative pain compared to open hernia repair
- →Three small keyhole scars instead of one large groin incision
- →Repairs both groin sides simultaneously through the same incisions
- →Allows return to office work within 5–7 days
- →Excellent option for recurrent hernias after previous open surgery
- →Very low long-term recurrence rate with quality lightweight mesh
A keyhole hernia repair done well is one of the most rewarding operations in general surgery — patients walk in worried about a long recovery and walk out realising they will be back to normal life within a week. Precision in mesh placement is what makes the result truly lasting.
