Laparoscopic Ventral / Incisional Hernia Repair
Minimally invasive keyhole repair of hernias on the front of the abdomen — including those at previous surgical scars — using mesh placed through small incisions for stronger, longer-lasting results.
What is Laparoscopic Ventral / Incisional Hernia Repair?
Laparoscopic Ventral / Incisional Hernia Repair is a keyhole technique used to repair hernias on the front of the abdomen — including primary umbilical and epigastric hernias, as well as incisional hernias that develop at the site of a previous surgical scar. A soft, dual-layered mesh is placed inside the abdomen through small ports to cover the defect with a wide overlap. Dr. Tejasree Vengala, a trusted laparoscopic surgeon in Hyderabad, performs this procedure at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, offering smaller scars, less pain, lower wound infection rates, and a faster return to normal life compared to open ventral hernia repair.
How the Procedure Works
Anaesthesia & Preparation
Surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. The abdomen is prepared, and a urinary catheter is placed for longer procedures.
Port Placement
Three to four small incisions are made on one side of the abdomen, away from the hernia, for the camera and instruments.
Adhesiolysis & Defect Sizing
Any adhesions between bowel and abdominal wall are carefully released, the defect is sized, and surrounding tissues are prepared for mesh.
Intraperitoneal Mesh Placement
A soft, dual-layered mesh designed for intra-abdominal use is positioned with a wide overlap and secured with absorbable tackers or sutures.
Closure & Recovery
The small incisions are closed with absorbable sutures. Most patients are mobilised the same day and discharged within 1–2 days.
Outcomes
Who Needs This Treatment?
- →Avoids a long, painful open abdominal incision
- →Significantly lower wound infection rate compared to open repair
- →Strong intra-abdominal mesh placement with wide overlap
- →Better cosmetic outcome with several small scars
- →Faster return to office work and normal daily activities
- →Effective for both primary and recurrent ventral or incisional hernias
Ventral and incisional hernias used to mean another long, painful scar — laparoscopic repair has changed that completely. With a well-placed mesh and meticulous overlap, patients are back on their feet in days, not weeks, and the long-term durability is excellent.
