Open Mesh Hernia Repair (Lichtenstein)
Time-tested open inguinal hernia surgery in which a soft mesh is placed to reinforce the weak groin area through a single small incision — a reliable, well-established technique with excellent long-term results.
What is Open Mesh Hernia Repair (Lichtenstein)?
Open Mesh Hernia Repair, also known as Lichtenstein tension-free repair, is the most widely performed and time-tested open surgery for inguinal hernias. Through a single small incision in the groin, the hernia sac is reduced and a soft polypropylene mesh is sutured in place to reinforce the weak area without putting any tension on surrounding tissues. Dr. Tejasree Vengala performs Lichtenstein repair at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, offering a safe, reliable solution with excellent long-term outcomes, particularly suited for patients in whom laparoscopic surgery is not the best option.
How the Procedure Works
Anaesthesia & Preparation
Surgery is usually performed under spinal anaesthesia or local anaesthesia with sedation. The groin area is cleaned and draped.
Groin Incision
A single small incision of 5–7 cm is made over the groin crease to expose the inguinal canal.
Hernia Reduction
The hernia sac is identified, dissected from surrounding tissues, and reduced back into the abdomen without any tension.
Mesh Fixation
A soft polypropylene mesh is placed and sutured in a tension-free manner over the weak area, fully covering the defect.
Closure & Recovery
The wound is closed in layers with absorbable sutures. Patients are typically discharged the same day or the next morning.
