Mohs Micrographic Surgery
Layer-by-layer removal of skin cancer with immediate microscopic examination — preferred for complex or recurrent skin cancers in cosmetically sensitive areas, with the highest cure rate and tissue preservation.
What is Mohs Micrographic Surgery?
Mohs Micrographic Surgery is a precision technique for removing skin cancer in stages, with immediate microscopic examination of each layer until completely clear margins are confirmed. By removing only diseased tissue and preserving healthy skin, Mohs surgery achieves the highest cure rates while giving the best possible cosmetic outcome — making it the preferred technique for skin cancers on the face, ears, hands, and other cosmetically sensitive areas. Dr. Tejasree Vengala coordinates Mohs and Mohs-style margin-controlled excision at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, for selected basal cell carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas and other complex skin cancers.
How the Procedure Works
Local Anaesthesia & Marking
The skin cancer is marked, and local anaesthesia is given. The procedure is comfortable and performed entirely under local anaesthesia.
First Layer Removal
A thin layer of tissue around and below the cancer is carefully removed with millimetre precision and mapped for orientation.
Microscopic Examination
The removed tissue is processed and examined under microscope while the patient waits, to identify any remaining cancer cells.
Targeted Re-Excision
If any cancer is still seen at the edges, only those specific areas are re-excised — sparing all healthy tissue. Steps 2–4 are repeated until margins are clear.
Reconstruction & Closure
Once clear margins are confirmed, the wound is closed using primary closure, local flap or skin graft, depending on size and location.
Outcomes
Who Needs This Treatment?
- →Highest cure rate for skin cancer of any technique
- →Maximum preservation of healthy surrounding tissue
- →Ideal for facial and cosmetically sensitive areas
- →Confirms clear margins before wound closure
- →Performed entirely as a day-care procedure
- →Ideal for recurrent and aggressive skin cancers
Mohs is a beautiful idea — take only what you must, and confirm it cell by cell before closing. On the face especially, every millimetre of healthy skin we save matters. The patient leaves with the highest chance of cure and the best possible cosmetic result.
