Skin Graft / Local Flap Reconstruction
Reconstruction of the skin defect after tumour excision using nearby skin (flap) or grafts taken from another site — used when direct closure is not possible due to size or location.
What is Skin Graft / Local Flap Reconstruction?
Skin Graft and Local Flap Reconstruction are essential techniques used to repair skin defects left after the removal of skin tumours, large lesions, or after wide local excision. When the wound is too large to close directly, healthy skin is borrowed either from a nearby area (local flap) or from a separate donor site (split-thickness or full-thickness graft). The choice depends on the size, location, and depth of the defect. Dr. Tejasree Vengala performs skin grafts and local flap reconstruction at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, with attention to both function and cosmetic outcome.
How the Procedure Works
Defect Assessment
After tumour or lesion removal, the size, depth, and location of the defect are assessed, and the most suitable reconstruction technique is selected.
Donor Site Preparation
For grafts, a donor site (usually the thigh, behind the ear, or upper arm) is prepared. For flaps, the adjacent skin is mobilised.
Graft / Flap Harvesting
A split-thickness or full-thickness graft is harvested with a special tool, or the local flap is gently elevated and rotated into position.
Inset & Suturing
The graft or flap is positioned over the defect and secured with fine absorbable or non-absorbable sutures, with attention to tension and contour.
Dressings & Recovery
A specific dressing is applied to support graft take or flap healing. Most patients are discharged the same day or next, with structured follow-up.
Outcomes
Who Needs This Treatment?
- →Closes large defects that cannot be sutured directly
- →Restores both skin coverage and contour
- →Local flaps offer the best colour and texture match
- →Skin grafts are an excellent option for very large areas
- →Tailored technique for each defect for the best result
- →Performed alongside cancer or lesion removal in the same sitting
Reconstruction is half of skin cancer surgery — taking out the disease is only the beginning. Choosing the right flap, the right graft, and the right tension is what gives the patient a result they can live with comfortably for years.
