Open Appendectomy
Conventional open surgical removal of the appendix through a small incision in the lower-right abdomen — used in select complicated cases or when laparoscopic surgery is not feasible.
What is Open Appendectomy?
Open Appendectomy is the traditional surgical removal of the appendix through a single small incision in the lower-right abdomen. While most appendicitis surgeries today are performed laparoscopically, the open approach is still essential in select complicated cases — such as severe peritonitis, large appendicular masses, dense adhesions from previous surgery, or when laparoscopy needs to be safely converted. Dr. Tejasree Vengala performs open appendectomy at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, ensuring complete removal of the diseased appendix with attention to safety and rapid recovery.
How the Procedure Works
Anaesthesia & Preparation
Surgery is performed under general or spinal anaesthesia. The abdomen is prepared and draped, and IV antibiotics are administered.
Right Iliac Fossa Incision
A small incision is made in the lower-right abdomen, usually along the natural skin lines, to expose the appendix.
Appendix Identification
The appendix is identified, freed from any adhesions, and the surrounding area is checked carefully for infection or fluid.
Appendix Removal
The appendiceal artery and base are tied off with sutures, and the appendix is removed completely. The base is secured to prevent leakage.
Washout & Closure
The area is washed thoroughly if contaminated. The wound is closed in layers, with patients mobilised the next day and usually discharged in 2–4 days.
Outcomes
Who Needs This Treatment?
- →Reliable and well-established surgical option
- →Allows complete direct vision in complicated appendicitis
- →Best option for widespread peritonitis or large inflammatory mass
- →Safe choice when laparoscopic surgery cannot be completed
- →Effective in patients with previous extensive abdominal surgery
- →Permanent cure for appendicitis and its complications
Open appendectomy still has its place — when the abdomen is full of pus or anatomy is hostile, an honest open approach is faster, safer and the right call. Choosing the right operation for the patient in front of you matters more than the route.
