COMMON VASCULAR CONDITION
Varicose Veins
Twisted, swollen veins that appear as bluish, rope-like cords beneath the skin — usually in the legs — often causing aching, heaviness, swelling, skin changes, and sometimes ulceration if untreated.
ABOUT THIS CONDITION
What is Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that develop when the one-way valves inside leg veins become weak, causing blood to pool and the veins to dilate. They are most commonly seen in the legs, presenting as visible bluish, rope-like cords beneath the skin, along with aching, heaviness, night cramps, swelling around the ankles, and skin discolouration. Risk factors include prolonged standing, family history, pregnancy, obesity, and ageing. If left untreated, varicose veins can progress to skin pigmentation, eczema, bleeding, or chronic non-healing leg ulcers (venous ulcers). Severity is graded using the CEAP classification (C0 to C6). Modern treatment is largely office-based or day-care, using laser, radiofrequency, glue or foam sclerotherapy. Dr. Tejasree Vengala offers complete varicose vein care at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad.

HOW WE TREAT IT
Treatment Approach
Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)
Dr. Tejasree Vengala performs Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) — a modern, minimally invasive day-care procedure in which laser energy is delivered through a small fibre to seal the diseased vein from inside. EVLA offers excellent long-term results, very small entry wounds, and a quick return to walking and routine activities.
- 1
Consultation & Assessment
Dr. Tejasree examines the legs, evaluates symptoms, and performs venous Doppler ultrasound to map the affected veins and plan treatment.
- 2
Treatment Planning
Based on size, distribution and severity, the most suitable approach is chosen — EVLA, RFA, glue, foam sclerotherapy or surgery — sometimes combined.
- 3
Procedure
Most treatments are performed under local or short anaesthesia as day-care procedures, usually completed within 60–90 minutes.
- 4
Recovery & Follow-up
Patients walk the same day and resume office work within 24–48 hours. Compression stockings and follow-up Doppler help maintain results.
AVAILABLE TREATMENTS
Treatment Options
Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)
Laser energy is delivered through a small fibre to seal the diseased vein from inside — minimally invasive with excellent long-term outcomes.
Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
Radiofrequency energy is used to heat and close the affected vein — equally effective alternative to EVLA with similar recovery.
Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy (UGFS)
A foam medication is injected under ultrasound guidance to close smaller varicose veins and reticular veins — quick office procedure.
Ambulatory Phlebectomy
Removal of bulging surface varicose veins through tiny skin punctures — combined with EVLA/RFA for visible cosmetic improvement.
High Ligation and Stripping
Conventional open surgery to tie off and remove the diseased vein — used in select large or complex varicose veins.
Cyanoacrylate Closure (Glue)
Medical-grade glue is used to seal the affected vein — no heat, no compression stockings needed, with very fast recovery.
