Hemithyroidectomy / Thyroid Lobectomy
Surgical removal of one lobe of the thyroid gland — the standard operation for solitary nodules, indeterminate FNAC reports, or low-risk thyroid cancers limited to one side.
What is Hemithyroidectomy / Thyroid Lobectomy?
Hemithyroidectomy, also known as Thyroid Lobectomy, is the surgical removal of one lobe of the thyroid gland along with the isthmus. It is the standard operation for a solitary thyroid nodule, indeterminate FNAC reports, or low-risk thyroid cancers limited to one lobe. The procedure is performed through a small, well-concealed incision in a natural neck crease, with meticulous protection of the recurrent laryngeal nerve and parathyroid glands. Dr. Tejasree Vengala performs hemithyroidectomy at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, offering excellent voice safety, very small scars, and a quick return to normal life.
How the Procedure Works
Anaesthesia & Preparation
Surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. The neck is positioned in slight extension and the area is prepared and draped.
Neck Crease Incision
A small 4–5 cm incision is made along a natural neck crease for the best cosmetic result.
Lobe Mobilisation
The strap muscles are gently separated, and the affected thyroid lobe is mobilised carefully from surrounding structures.
Nerve & Parathyroid Preservation
The recurrent laryngeal nerve and parathyroid glands are identified and protected throughout. The lobe and isthmus are then removed.
Closure & Recovery
The wound is closed in layers with absorbable sutures and skin glue. Most patients are discharged in 1–2 days with minimal scarring.
Outcomes
Who Needs This Treatment?
