Total Thyroidectomy
Surgical removal of the entire thyroid gland with meticulous nerve and parathyroid preservation — performed for thyroid cancer, large multinodular goitre, and select cases of Graves' disease.
What is Total Thyroidectomy?
Total Thyroidectomy is the complete surgical removal of the thyroid gland and is the definitive treatment for thyroid cancer, large multinodular goitre with pressure symptoms, and select cases of Graves' disease. The surgery is performed through a small, well-concealed incision in a natural neck crease, with meticulous identification and preservation of the recurrent laryngeal nerves and parathyroid glands. Dr. Tejasree Vengala performs total thyroidectomy at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, offering excellent cosmetic results and a very low risk of voice or calcium-related complications.
How the Procedure Works
Anaesthesia & Preparation
Surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. The neck is positioned in slight extension and the area is prepared and draped.
Neck Crease Incision
A small 5–6 cm incision is placed in a natural neck crease for the best cosmetic outcome.
Bilateral Lobe Mobilisation
Both thyroid lobes are carefully mobilised from surrounding structures, with attention to the strap muscles and large neck vessels.
Nerve & Parathyroid Preservation
Both recurrent laryngeal nerves and all four parathyroid glands are identified and protected throughout the dissection.
Removal & Closure
The entire thyroid is removed in one piece. The wound is closed in layers with absorbable sutures and skin glue, with most patients discharged in 2 days.
Outcomes
Who Needs This Treatment?
- →Curative surgery for most differentiated thyroid cancers
- →Relieves pressure symptoms from large goitres
- →Definitive solution for difficult Graves' disease
- →Allows safe radioiodine therapy when needed
- →Excellent cosmetic outcome with neck crease incision
- →Voice and parathyroid function carefully preserved
Total thyroidectomy is one of the most precise operations in surgery — every nerve, every parathyroid, every millimetre matters. When done well, the patient walks out with a tiny crease on the neck, a normal voice, and complete clearance of the disease.
