Q: Will I need lifelong medication?

Yes. Since the entire thyroid is removed, daily thyroid hormone tablets are required for life. The dose is adjusted based on simple blood tests, and most patients feel well on stable medication.

Q: Will my voice change?

Permanent voice change is rare in experienced hands. Both recurrent laryngeal nerves are carefully identified and preserved. Mild temporary voice tiredness can occur and usually settles in a few weeks.

Q: Will my calcium levels drop after surgery?

Temporary low calcium can occur if the parathyroid glands are bruised. Calcium and vitamin D supplements quickly correct this. Permanent calcium problems are uncommon in experienced hands.

What is Total Thyroidectomy?

Total Thyroidectomy is the complete surgical removal of the thyroid gland and is the definitive treatment for thyroid cancer, large multinodular goitre with pressure symptoms, and select cases of Graves' disease. Bilateral Lobe Mobilisation

Both thyroid lobes are carefully mobilised from surrounding structures, with attention to the strap muscles and large neck vessels.

Removal & Closure
