What is Hiatal Hernia Repair?

Laparoscopic Hiatal Hernia Repair corrects the abnormal upward movement of the stomach through the diaphragmatic hiatus into the chest. The hernia is gently reduced back into the abdomen, the widened diaphragm opening is repaired, and the lower oesophagus is restored to its natural position. In most patients, this is combined with a fundoplication (Nissen, Toupet or Dor) to provide lasting relief from acid reflux. Dr. Tejasree Vengala performs laparoscopic hiatus hernia repair at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, with mesh reinforcement when indicated for large or paraesophageal hernias.

Suitable for patients with symptomatic hiatus hernia causing severe reflux, regurgitation, chest pain, breathlessness on lying down, or large paraesophageal hernias at risk of complications.

How the Procedure Works

1

Anaesthesia & Preparation

Surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. The abdomen is prepared and draped, and a urinary catheter is placed.

2

Port Placement

Four to five small incisions of 5–10 mm are made in the upper abdomen for the camera and working instruments.

3

Hernia Reduction

The herniated stomach is gently brought back into the abdomen, and the hernia sac is carefully dissected away from the chest.

4

Crural Repair

The widened diaphragmatic crura are sutured back together. Mesh reinforcement is added for very large hernias.

5

Anti-Reflux Wrap & Recovery

A fundoplication (Nissen, Toupet, or Dor) is added to prevent reflux. Patients start liquids the same evening and are discharged in 1–2 days.
