Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication
Modern keyhole surgery to create a 360° wrap of the upper stomach around the lower oesophagus — the gold standard for severe acid reflux and GERD, providing long-lasting relief from medication.
What is Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication?
Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication is the gold-standard surgical treatment for severe gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD), particularly in patients with persistent symptoms despite medication, large hiatus hernias, or complications such as oesophagitis or Barrett's oesophagus. Through 4–5 keyhole incisions, the upper part of the stomach (fundus) is wrapped 360° around the lower oesophagus, recreating an effective anti-reflux barrier. As an experienced laparoscopic surgeon in Hyderabad, Dr. Tejasree Vengala performs Nissen fundoplication at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, with most patients enjoying lasting relief from medication.
How the Procedure Works
Anaesthesia & Preparation
Surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. The abdomen is prepared and draped, and a urinary catheter is placed.
Port Placement
Four to five small incisions of 5–10 mm are made in the upper abdomen for the camera and working instruments.
Hiatus Hernia Reduction
Any hiatus hernia is gently reduced back into the abdomen, and the lower oesophagus is mobilised carefully.
Crural Repair & Wrap Formation
The diaphragmatic crura are repaired around the oesophagus, and the upper stomach is wrapped 360° behind and around the lower oesophagus.
Wrap Fixation & Recovery
The wrap is secured with sutures. Patients usually start liquids the same evening and are discharged within 1–2 days.
Outcomes
Who Needs This Treatment?
- →Effective long-term cure for severe acid reflux
- →Eliminates the need for daily acid suppression medication
- →Repairs associated hiatus hernia in the same sitting
- →Keyhole technique with very small scars
- →Quick recovery and return to normal life
- →Improves quality of life dramatically in well-selected patients
When patients have lived with severe reflux for years, fundoplication is a life-changing operation — they suddenly sleep flat, eat freely and stop fearing every meal. The key is selecting the right patient, repairing the hiatus carefully, and creating a wrap that is neither too tight nor too loose.
