What is TIF (Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication)?

TIF (Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication) is a modern endoscopic technique to treat acid reflux without any abdominal incisions. A specialised endoscopic device is passed through the mouth, and the natural anti-reflux barrier between the oesophagus and stomach is reconstructed using internal fasteners. TIF is suitable for selected patients with mild to moderate GERD who have not responded fully to medication or wish to avoid lifelong drug therapy, and who do not have a large hiatus hernia. Dr. Tejasree Vengala coordinates TIF at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, in collaboration with specialist endoscopy teams.

Suitable for select patients with mild to moderate GERD without large hiatus hernia, those wanting to avoid lifelong medication, those not suitable for laparoscopic fundoplication, or as a step before considering full surgery.

How the Procedure Works

1

Sedation & Preparation

The procedure is performed under sedation or short anaesthesia. The patient lies in a comfortable position, and a mouthguard is placed.

2

Endoscope Insertion

A specialised endoscope with the TIF device is gently passed through the mouth into the stomach.

3

Valve Reconstruction

The device folds tissue to reconstruct the natural anti-reflux valve at the gastro-oesophageal junction.

4

Fastener Placement

Multiple internal fasteners are deployed to hold the reconstructed valve in place — no external incisions are needed.

5

Recovery & Discharge

The procedure typically takes 60–90 minutes. Most patients are discharged the same day with a graded diet plan.
