What is Infrared Coagulation (IRC)?

Infrared Coagulation (IRC) is a quick, painless office procedure for grade 1 and select grade 2 internal piles. A focused infrared light beam is directed at the base of the haemorrhoid for a few seconds, coagulating the tissue and cutting off its blood supply. The haemorrhoid then gradually shrinks. There are no cuts, no anaesthesia, and most patients return to routine activities the same day. As a female proctologist in Hyderabad, Dr. Tejasree Vengala performs IRC at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, offering discreet, dignified care.

Suitable for grade 1 and select grade 2 internal piles with bleeding or mild prolapse, especially in patients wanting a quick, painless office-based option.

How the Procedure Works

1

Examination & Positioning

A gentle proctoscopic examination identifies the haemorrhoids. The patient lies in a comfortable position.

2

Proctoscope Insertion

A small, well-lubricated proctoscope is inserted to clearly visualise the internal haemorrhoids.

3

Infrared Light Application

A specialised IRC probe is gently placed at the base of the haemorrhoid, and focused infrared light is applied for 1–2 seconds at multiple points.

4

Quick Completion

The procedure typically takes 5–10 minutes per haemorrhoid and is virtually painless. Multiple haemorrhoids may need separate sittings.

5

Post-Procedure & Discharge

The patient is observed for a few minutes and discharged immediately. Diet, medications, and follow-up advice are given clearly.
