What is Rubber Band Ligation (RBL / Banding)?

Rubber Band Ligation (RBL), also known as banding, is a quick, effective office-based procedure for grade 1, grade 2 and selected grade 3 internal piles. Tight rubber bands are placed around the base of the haemorrhoid using a specialised applicator, cutting off its blood supply. The haemorrhoid shrinks and falls off naturally over 5–7 days. There are no cuts, no anaesthesia, no hospital admission, and most patients return to routine activities the same day. As an experienced female proctologist in Hyderabad, Dr. Tejasree Vengala performs RBL at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, with discreet, dignified, sensitive care.

Suitable for grade 1, grade 2 and select grade 3 internal piles with bleeding, mild prolapse, or persistent symptoms despite dietary measures and medication.

How the Procedure Works

1

Examination & Positioning

A gentle proctoscopic examination identifies the haemorrhoids. The patient lies in a comfortable position.

2

Proctoscope Insertion

A small, well-lubricated proctoscope is inserted to clearly visualise the internal haemorrhoids.

3

Band Application

A specialised applicator places one or two tight rubber bands around the base of the haemorrhoid above the dentate line — this area has no pain sensation.

4

Quick Completion

The procedure typically takes 10–15 minutes and is virtually painless. Multiple haemorrhoids may need separate sittings.

5

Post-Procedure & Discharge

The patient is observed for a few minutes and discharged immediately. Diet, medications and follow-up advice are given clearly.
